A team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has been deployed to investigate the rape and subsequent murder of a 16-year-old girl in Surkhet.
Chief of the Surkhet District Police Office SP Sudhir Raj Shahi stated that a team under the command of an inspector from the CIB arrived in Surkhet on Thursday. He added that while the local police are already conducting an investigation, the CIB team has arrived to assist them.
The District Police Office, Surkhet has formed a separate team to investigate the incident. SP Shahi added that the CIB team was brought in to ensure no facts are missed during the investigation.
The 16-year-old girl from Gurbhakot Municipality-6 had been living with her mother in Birendranagar-1. A grade 11 student, she had left home at around 8:00 on the morning of March 7 to go for a morning walk with friends in the Janajagaran Community Forest of Birendranagar-4. It is alleged that she subsequently met a teenage boy who forcibly raped her in the forest. Police investigations have revealed that the minor sustained injuries to her genitals during the sexual assault.
According to statements given to the police, the teenage boy called his friends after the girl suffered excessive bleeding. Following reports that she was in an unconscious state, the police reached the scene. The girl was later taken to the Provincial Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The police have taken four teenage boys into custody and are investigating their involvement.
A formal complaint has been filed against all four individuals at the police office. Following the complaint, the police initiated the investigation process on Sunday after obtaining a judicial remand for charges of rape and homicide. After an initial six-day remand, the suspects were taken back to the district court on Thursday for a further extension of their remand.
